Know what the recommended dietary intake is for YOU

Not sure where to start? The Australian Dietary Guidelines are your ultimate source of guidance, backed by extensive scientific research on dietary behaviours and outcomes. The guidelines set out the recommended number of daily serves for each of the key 5 food groups, with some additional key advice. Check out the recommended daily serves of each food group for your age and gender, and aim to work these into your diet: 

  • Fruit 
  • Vegetables 
  • Grains or cereals 
  • Lean meat, poultry, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds, and legumes/beans 
  • Milk, yoghurt, cheese or alternatives 

Remember to also: 

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day 
  • Limit your intake of junk food and discretionary foods 

Let’s not forget the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating, another great visual reminder of what a healthy diet should comprise, with some helpful examples of each food group! 

Already nailed the healthy food intake? Keep it interesting and add variety by incorporating a new vegetable into one of your meals each day.  

DID YOU KNOW: 1 in 2 Australian adults are not consuming the recommended amount of fruit per day, with only 1 in 10 consuming their recommended serves of vegetables per day. 

MINDSET CHECK: Don’t let the word “diet” deter you from helpful information. Diet is also another term for food intake, so think positively and try not to associate informative “diet” talk with restrictive or fad diet discussion
